THE DEATH SPELL
Bio
Formed in Auckland, New Zealand in 2021, The Death Spell are a three-piece heavy rock band drawing from the darker end of ’70s hard rock, early heavy metal, psychedelia and punk.
Led by singer and guitarist Oz, the band keep things stripped back to the essentials: guitar, bass and drums. No excess, no layers for the sake of it, just a heavy three-piece sound built on riffs, volume and the chemistry between the players.
The Death Spell first surfaced in October 2023 with “Witch’s Coven.” Their self-released debut album followed on December 24, opening with “Nail You Higher Than Before.” With no label behind it, the record travelled well beyond New Zealand and reached #8 on the Doom Charts.
In 2024 the band took on a new shape, with Boot, formerly of New Zealand punk veterans Sticky Filth, joining on drums and Bruno, formerly of Ratso, on bass. The heavier, more instinctive rhythm section pushed the music further toward the raw sound the band had been chasing from the beginning.
Their first recorded document as this lineup, Second Dawning: Live in Tāmaki Makaurau, was captured live on September 20, 2025. No studio reconstruction, no attempt to clean up the edges, just the three-piece as it exists now: loud, primitive and alive.
